New Jersey Shore – This Saturday the NJ Organizing Project (release) will host the “Our NJ Our Future Convention.” Amanda Devecka-Rinear for NJOP states: I know many of you may be watching Michael hit Florida and the rain outside your window right now. Yesterday, a Sandy survivor told me when she watches videos of storms hitting and people cleaning out she thinks, ‘They have no idea, that’s the fun part.” She’s still not finished six years later, and the same is true of 19% of the people in the RREM program.

We can pray for these families, and we can donate supplies and send them down.  But we also have to be the ones who change the system for disaster recovery. These programs must work for our families, not crooked contractors, big insurance and politically connected companies. It’s on us to make sure we learn the lessons of Sandy and that we invest significantly more to prepare our communities for storms and flooding.

And that is one incredibly good reason to come to the NJOP Convention, “Our New Jersey, Our Future,” this Saturday from 9am – 4pm in Manahawkin.

Here are a few more:

  1. We’re supporting grassroots community leadership & people (not party) first politics.
  2. We have two more exciting speakers joining us! Lisa Stevens, current Little Egg Harbor Township Committee Member and NJOP Co-Founder will be joining us. And so will Andy Kim, who is running for Congress in Burlington and Ocean County.
  3. We have some critical resources – RREM staff will be there to assist people with individual cases, The Affordable Housing Alliance will be there to help with Housing Counseling, and we will have a Healthcare Navigator there to help people who need to sign up for healthcare.

We’re going to break bread together and be in community. I’m looking forward to it. And speaking of breaking bread, I want to make sure we have enough eggplant parm and sausage and peppers. If you know you’re coming, please register in advance by clicking here.
